Zen time, guaranteed

Zen time, guaranteed

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is quite possibly my favourite week of the year. First of all, there’s always a fridge full of leftovers and a counter full of baked goods. Second, you’ve got all your awesome new Christmas stuff to enjoy. And third, it’s the week before this year ends and the new one begins, which means it’s brimming with reflection, anticipation, and possibility.

So whether you had a hectic festive season and are in need of some alone time, or are still riding the wave of mellow holiday vibes, look no further for some opportunities for zen-ing out. Maybe you’re still working on that Christmas puzzle and want something other than the same jolly crap you’ve been listening to ad nauseum. Maybe you want to watch and hear some gorgeous shit so you don’t have to watch one more children’s holiday television special. Regardless of why you could use a moment of relaxation, I’m here for you.

Enjoy the zen-out!

Pre-deciding to have a less sucky holiday season

Pre-deciding to have a less sucky holiday season

The other day, I talked about designing daily routines to support your personal mission. Ma boy Stephen Covey recommended in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People that, if you want to get something done – if you’re committed to including it as part of your well-designed life – then dammit, you better schedule it.

I mostly agree with Covey, though I personally like to work in a slightly more flexible/modular system day-to-day. However, for the Big Important Things that I know will bring me lots of value, you better believe those babies go in the calendar. In pen. Ohhh yes.

I’ve also talked about my affinity for what I call Pre-decisions. What better pre-decision than booking something – especially something hard to back out of? Even if it’s something I’m a little unsure about, booking things makes me get outside my comfort zone, fills up my life with things that are aspirational (in a good way!), and moves me closer and closer to #livingmybestlife.

To two young ladies who texted through an entire symphony concert

To two young ladies who texted through an entire symphony concert

Ladies,

Look. We’ve all been there. We’ve all been somewhere we didn’t necessarily want to be. We’ve all been young and stupid and too smart-assy for our own good. We’ve all been young rebels who laugh at how idiotic everything is. We’ve all felt uncomfortable somewhere and, rather than explore that discomfort, we have chosen to protect ourselves by trying to look aloof. Especially as young people. We’ve all been there.

I know I looked lame last night when I kept staring at you, slack-jawed in amazement at your total disregard for your surroundings. I know I must have seemed as old as the actual old lady sitting in front of me who was incredibly distracted by the light from your screens, the tap tap tap of your manicured nails as you texted, and your painfully audible “whispers” filled with eyeroll-worthy content. I know I must have seemed just as uncool as the moms who had brought a large group of little girls and boys to what might have been their first symphony concert, who unfortunately had to put up with you sitting behind them. Yup, I might seem like all of those things, even though I’m pretty sure I’m only a few years your senior.

Ladies, I’m here to tell you I get you. Hell, in other situations I probably was you. But, because you were too absorbed in Snapchatting parts of the concert, texting whoever the hell you were texting, and scrolling through goddamned Pinterest, let me give you a brief rundown of what you missed….
